Want healthy glowing skin? Then wear SPF daily, give yourself a facial massage and reduce stress, says a skin expert.

One too many late nights and indulging in our favourite foods and drinks during the festive season, combined with central heating and cold weather can leave our complexions dull, dehydrated, and congested.

Besides drinking large amounts of water, exercising regularly, and getting enough beauty sleep, incorporating hardworking skincare products into your routine is essential for achieving a healthy, naturally glowing complexion.

Ahead Alice Henshaw, skin expert, and owner of Harley Street Injectables shares her top tips and beauty products for reviving your complexion for a glowing start to the New Year.

Alice Henshaw, practitioner and owner of Harley Street Injectables shares how to achieve healthy and glowing skin at home

    1.  You should always wear sunscreen every day

Sunscreen is not to be overlooked and should be applied every day - inside and outside. SPF will help protect you against environmental pollutants, sun spots, hyperpigmentation, and wrinkles.

'Wearing SPF is the best way to prolong healthy, glowing skin, even in the midst of winter,' says Alice, who recommends SkinCeuticals Ultra Facial Defense SPF 50 (£41). 'When it comes to how to get flawless skin, know that 90 per cent of wrinkles are from sun exposure and it’s so much easier to prevent the damage than it is to fix it afterwards.

'That means no slacking during the colder months either. Furthermore, don't forget to apply when you're working from home by a window, as cell-damaging UVA rays can penetrate glass, too.

SPF will help protect you against environmental pollutants, sun spots, hyperpigmentation, and wrinkles

'Look for a formula that offers broad-spectrum protection to guard against UVA rays (the ones that cause premature ageing) and UVB rays (one of the main causes of skin cancer).'

    2. Indulge in a weekly face mask

'In my opinion, face masks shouldn't even be considered an indulgence - you should apply these regularly,' explains Alice.

To hydrate and maintain a radiant, dewy glow, Alice recommends opting for a face mask formulated with glow-including ingredients such as her sell-out Skincycles Hydrating Silk Biocellulose Masks (£80 for a box of five) that leave skin fresh and radiant in just 20 minutes.

'I recommend trying our Hydrating Hydrating Silk Biocellulose Masks which contain active ingredients such as palmitoyl hexapeptide-12, which significantly increases collagen and hyaluronic acid in the skin.

'Other antioxidants include hyaluronic acid, blue agave and ruby formosa help promote moisture, increase lifting and firming of the skin.'

    3. Try an LED light mask

As much as we love a professional beauty treatment, at-home treatments are rising in popularity as shoppers seek clinic-like results. If you want something that will make a greater difference to your skin, Alice recommends investing in the FDA-cleared Dr Dennis Gross SpectraLite™ FaceWare Pro mask (£430), which is an 'LED mask offering professional light therapy at the comfort of your home'.

An effective treatment that combines red and blue LED lights to smooth wrinkles, diminish discoloration, and clear acne for a beautiful, youthful complexion, results are noticeable within just ten weeks.

    4. Add collagen to your diet

'Collagen is a protein that connects tendons, ligaments, and muscles together in the body. It is also a major constituent of skin and bones,' explains Alice.

While collagen is naturally produced by our bodies, as we get older Alice further explained how collagen production slows down, which can contribute to 'hair thinning, thin brittle nails and skin elasticity loss.'

Eating foods like meat, fish and dairy can increase the levels of collagen, but if you're looking for additional ways to boost your natural collagen production, Alice recommends trying out Dose & Co Collagen Peptides Unflavoured 200g (£26.99) powdered supplement, consuming one to two tablespoons of collagen powder a day.

Impressively 89 per cent of people felt that their skin looked healthier after one month trial of using Dose & Co

Available at Holland and Barret, the unflavoured collagen peptide formula is made with 100 per cent natural ingredients and high-quality sustainably sourced collagen. And most impressively the brand reports that 89 per cent of people felt that their skin looked healthier after one month trial of using Dose & Co.

    5. Minimise stress

'Chronic stress can seriously damage your skin—and even trigger a host of issues, including autoimmune pathways,' warns Alice.

'All the more reason to commit to a proper self-care routine, whatever that may look like for you (although may we suggest a few aforementioned tips such as making time for face masks, facials, exercise, and beauty sleep).'

    6.  Use retinol in your skincare routine

Retinol (vitamin-A derivative) is an anti-aging hero and helps fix almost everything, including wrinkles, dullness, oiliness, sagging skin, and age spots. It also treats acne and skin conditions like keratosis pilaris, which is why so many dermatologists recommend it.

The buzzy skincare ingredient works by speeding up cell turnover and collagen production and is 'amazing for promoting healthy, glowing skin' says Alice.

'First, it actually repairs DNA damage from the sun and environment and can even be protective against precancerous skin lesions. Second, it keeps the top layer of skin from building up and looking dull by promoting accelerated skin cell turnover.'

She added: 'If you decide retinols are not for you—for whatever reason—consider Bakuchoil - a natural topical alternative that yields the same results.'

The best retinol serums, creams, and treatments to try now include Dr Dennis Gross' new Advanced Retinol + Ferulic Overnight Texture Renewal Peel (£79), the La Roche-Posay Retinol B3 Serum 30ml (£38), and Kate Somerville's Retinol Vitamin C Moisturizer 50ml (£79).

The Multi-Sculpt has six different edges that 'help you lift, contour and reduce facial tension, releasing blockages in the muscles and aiding lymphatic drainage to depuff the skin and soften fine lines'

    7.  Practice a facial massage routine

For instantly brighter skin at home, beauty fanatics are turning to facial gua sha. A traditional Chinese healing method, a gua sha stone tool is used in long strokes across your face to stimulate blood flow and aid lymphatic drainage.

The sculpting tool not only delivers a gentle massage and moment of self-care 'but this can lessen tension and increase circulation, thereby helping to keep skin cells healthy and aiding in lymphatic drainage' explains Alice.

'Commit to a daily facial gua sha routine or use a jade roller. It only takes a few minutes a day, and the post-facial massage glow (courtesy of aforementioned increased circulation) will be so worth it.'

Try the Face Gym Multi-Sculpt High-Performance Controuing Tool (£45).

Beauty Brands Break Down 2022's Top Tips

Opt for an oil based pre-cleansing solution to remove dirt, oil and makeup before you cleanse. — Dermalogica Clear Start

This year there are countless beauty and skincare faux pax that should be left where they belong – in the past.

From going to bed without removing your makeup to using expired products, tips for a better beauty ritual are ever-evolving.

These brands break down the best beauty tips to adopt in 2022.

Sephora Malaysia: Undoubtedly, beauty routines should be an enjoyable experience for everyone to wind down and wash the day away.

Beauty routines are not a one-size fits all; it is what works best for you.

As we wear masks on the daily, keep it simple with just three steps: cleanse, tone and moisturise to ensure skin remains supple and nourished all day long. Then, lock in the good-for-skin ingredients by applying SPF, ensuring your skin is protected from external aggressors.

When it comes to makeup, we are constantly inspired by our beauty community’s creative expression as they are the artist and muse. Experiment and play with colours that complement your skin tone while highlighting your facial features. Whether it’s shimmer, bold or natural, whatever the look, it should represent who you are and what makes you feel good.

Supergoop!: The most important and critical part of taking care of your skin is to wear sunscreen! While there’s no one-size fits all SPF, Supergoop! Provides a variety of options for everyone.

Dermalogica Clear Start: If you haven’t already, ditch the makeup wipes and opt for an oil based pre-cleansing solution to remove dirt, oil and makeup before you cleanse.

Oil sticks to oil so an oil-based product really works to prep your skin for actual cleansing. Another tip is to use our breakout clearing booster as a mix-in with your moisturiser – add a few drops into the palm of your hand, mix with your moisturiser and apply to skin to combat breakouts while also hydrating.

Finally, exfoliation is key to smooth, glowing skin.

Exfoliants range in strength so be sure to pay attention to the suggested usage (once a week, daily, etc.) so you don’t over-exfoliate. I recommend acid based exfoliants (also called chemical exfoliants) vs physical because they are less abrasive.
